Flag

The flag of New Zealand, approved on March 24, 1902, is a rectangular cloth in the ratio 1: 2 . The prototype of the current flag with a blue flag and a British flag in the corner appeared in 1865 as a result of a government decree that ships of all British colonies should have such a flag. In 1867-1869, the red letters NZ were in the lower right corner, and in 1869-1902 there were four red stars with a white border. The blue flag background is associated with the blue of the sky and sea surrounding the country. Stars of the Southern Cross communicate with the location of the country in the South Pacific. The symbolism of the flag of Great Britain speaks of the historical heritage that the country was a former British colony .

The first national emblem of New Zealand was put into circulation in 1911, the current emblem was adopted in 1956. The coat of arms is a shield held on one side by a blond woman with the New Zealand flag in her hands and on the other hand by a Maori warrior. Above the shield rises the crown of St. Edward. Under the shield are two branches of fern. The coat of arms is associated with the unity of all cultures and peoples inhabiting the country, and with the commitment of the New Zealand monarchy.
Coat of arms

Two anthems are recognized as national in New Zealand - "God, Defend New Zealand" and "God, Save the Queen".

The text “God Defend New Zealand” was written in 1870 by Thomas Bracken. The winner of the music contest for the text, held in 1876, was John Joseph Woods (born John Joseph Woods). The song gained popularity, and in 1940 the country's government acquired the copyright in it and identified it as a national anthem. But only in 1977, the song was legally approved as the second national anthem.

The text of the anthem “God Defend New Zealand” consists of five verses. The original text is written in English, the official version also has a translation into Maori. Traditionally, only the first verse is performed at government events: first, a Maori version sounds, then an English version.
