Read the following excerpt from a
novel.
The Restaurant
at the End of the Universe.
A large cow with big eyes and a smile approached
Zaphod’s table. “Good evening,” it said and sat down, “Are you ready to order?
I’m the main Dish of the Day. May I interest you in parts of my body?”
“Er, your shoulder?” said Arthur horrified.
“But naturally my shoulder, sir.”
Zaphod jumped up and and felt the animal’s
shoulder.
“My meat is very good,” it said. “I’ve been
exercising and eating plenty of grass.”
“This animal actually wants us to eat it!”
whispered Trillian.
“That’s horrible!” exclaimed Arthur.
“What’s the problem, Earthman?” said Zaphod.
“I don’t want to eat an animal that’s
standing there inviting me to,” said Arthur, “it’s cruel.”
“It’s better than eating an animal that
doesn’t want to be eaten, said Zaphod.”
“That’s not the point,” Arthur protested.
Than he thought for a moment. “Alright,” he said, “maybe it is, but…” He looked
at the menu.
“I think I’ll just have a salad.”
The cow spoke up. “Why don’t you have some
nice roast beef with peas and carrots? Or how about a steak fried with onions?
Rare, medium or well done?”
“A salad,” said Arthur emphatically, “some
lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes and maybe some sweetcorn.”
“A salad,” said an animal, disapprovingly.
“Are you telling me I shouldn’t have salad?”
“Well,” said the animal, “I know many
vegetables that don’t think you should. Which is why it was such a good idea to create an animal
that actually wants to be eaten and can say so clearly. And here I am.”
“A glass of water,please,” said Arthur.
“Look,” said Zaphod, “I’m really hungry!
Four rare steaks please, and hurry. We havent eaten in five hundred and
seventy-six thousand million years.”
The animal looked delighted.
“A very good choice, sir, if I may say so.
I’ll just go and shoot myself.”
As it walked slowly towards the kitchen, it
gave Arthur a friendly smile.
“Don’t worry, sir,” he said. “I’ll be very
humane.”
A few minutes later the waiter arrived with
four huge steaks served with mashed potatoes, boiled cabbage and mushrooms.
Zaphod and Ford started eating without a second’s hesitation. Trillian paused,
then picked up her knife and fork.
Arthur started at his feeling slightly ill.
“Hey, Earthman,” said Zaphod with a
malicious smile on the face that wasn’t stuffing itself, “what’s eating you?”

Geographical Position of the USA - Географічне положення США
The USA occupies the central part of the North American continent.
It borders on Canada in the north and Mexico in the south.
It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the east, by the Pacific Ocean in the west and by the Gulf of Mexico in the south.
The present territory of the USA consists of three separate parts.
The USA proper and Alaska are situated in North America.
The Hawaii are situated in the central part of the Pacific Ocean.
The area of the country is about 9,400,000 km2.
Its population is about 256 million people.
No general statement can be made about the landscape of the USA.
It is a country of mountains and prairies, valleys and deserts.
About one half of the territory in the west is occupied by the Cordilleras.
In the east there are the Appalachian Mountains.
Between these great mountain chains central and large valleys lie.
The Rocky Mountains extend from Alaska through Canada and the USA to Mexico.
Together with the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California they have snow-capped peaks and clear mountain lakes.
The Great Lakes are situated in the north- east of the country.
They are Lake Ontario, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan.
The largest rivers of the USA are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Columbia, the Colorado, and the Yukon.
American rivers have very expressive names: the Snake River, the Milk River, the Green River, the Sweetwater River, the White River.
The USA has rich deposits of coal, oil, iron, zinc, copper, silver, phosphate rock, natural gas, uranium and non-ferrous metals.
The country has one fourth of the world’s coal deposits.

ПИСЬМОВО ПЕРЕКЛАДІТЬ ТЕКСТ НА АНГЛІЙСЬКУ МОВУ
Повноцінне, збалансоване харчування є однією з умов нормального функціонування дитячого організму. Раціональне харчування зумовлює належний розвиток усіх життєво важливих органів і систем, сприяє зміцненню захисних функцій організму. Якість харчування опосередковано і безпосередньо впливає на якість засвоєння школярем навчального матеріалу. Період від 6 до 18 років, коли дитина проводить більше часу в школі, характеризується підвищеним розумовим і фізичним навантаженням. Тому збереженню здоров’я дитячого організму та його гармонійному розвитку сприятиме забезпечення підростаючого покоління повноцінним і збалансованим харчуванням і дотримання у шкільних їдальнях сучасних вимог якості та безпеки харчових продуктів. Для підтримання здоров’я учнів, необхідно дотримуватись трьох принципів здорового харчування:
1. Помірність – калорійність раціону не перевищує енергетичних витрат організму.
2. Різноманітність – споживання усіх основних груп харчових продуктів: хліб і крупи; овочі та фрукти; м’ясо та молочні вироби.
3. Збалансованість – правильне співвідношення груп харчових продуктів. Вас цікавить питання, як навчити дитину їсти правильно? Тоді спробуйте організувати здорове харчування для дітей разом з самою дитиною. Намагайтеся щодня пояснювати, що для того, щоб бути здоровим і сильним, потрібно їсти їжу, яка приносить користь організму і володіє багатьма поживними властивостями. Перетворіть правильне харчування для дітей в гру. Наприклад, вирушаючи разом з дитиною в супермаркет, запропонуйте їй самостійно наповнити кошик корисними продуктами. Одночасно пояснюйте, чому яблука корисніше печива, чому від морквини дітки швидше ростуть і т.д. У такій ігровій формі дитина швидше зрозуміє, як правильно харчуватися. Розмовляючи з дитиною про правильне харчування для молодших школярів, ні в якому разі не перетворюйте розмову в лекцію. Пам’ятайте: найкраще діти сприймають інформацію в ігровій, цікавій формі.
